There have been rumours of layoffs coming for a while now. I knew I was safe, luckily. My boss told me about a month ago that I wouldn't be affected. But its really sad... we lost 2 people in our department. One had been with the company a very long time. Since I've known this was coming for a while, I've been walking around at work wondering who was going to be affected. I never would have guessed that some of the people that were let go today ever would have been at risk. I think some mistakes were made in the decision making process.
Even though I am lucky enough to still have my job, today really made me realize how much I need to get my act together and rebuild our emergency fund. We used to have 6 months of living expenses in our joint savings account as an emergency fund. That was pretty much depleted when we bought the new condo.
Yet another reason I need to stick with my August Grocery Challenge and spend as little as possible so I can save more.
It is always very hard when layoffs occur, to everyone involved. When I first started with my current FT employer, within less than 5 months I was told that it was extremely likely I'd be laid off and that I should start looking at other work opportunities. I did that, but the layoff never came. This was 4 years ago, and my job is pretty much secure now, but it was a lot of uncertainties going back then... I knew nothing of finances, and there was little besides my credit at stake.
