Why our Garage Door wouldn't Open

Something happened at some point while we were away on vacation and when we came home we couldn't get into our garage.  Yesterday we had a local handyman come over to try to get the garage door open as we have no other way into our garage.

Luckily, we have a crawl space above the garage and the repairman was able to get into it from the crawl space opening in our tenants garage.  And what did he find?

Part of the ceiling in our garage had collapsed!  And when it fell, it unplugged the garage door opener.  Luckily the garage door track kept most of the ceiling from completely falling and landing on Mr. R's new car.

So now our garage door is stuck open until we can figure out what to do.  I want to talk to the insurance company first so I know if this is covered.  The handyman recommended a local restoration company that will deal with the insurance company and everything so I may go that route.

And why did the ceiling collapse?!  We have no idea.  You would think it would be because of the freezing weather, snow and ice.  But there's no sign of any water damage so we have no clue as to why this would just happen.

The repairman charged us $65 which came out of home repair fund.

  1. The same thing happened to a guy my hubs works with. He heard a noise out in the garage late at night and found the ceiling had fallen. In his case, because the wall board was put in with nails NOT screws they think with the extreme swings in temp here lately the nails just contracted so much that it dropped the wallboard. check and see if yours was but in with nails or screws and that might be the culprit.

  2. You count on your garage door to bar unwanted entry from your home and protect your car, which is a significant investment. Since your garage door protects so much and because a ceiling collapse sounds pretty severe, you may want to have a tech who specializes in garage door repair visit your home as soon as possible.

  3. Sorry that you had a problem with the garage door. I've recently installed a back up battery, as I could not get the garage door open when the power went out. This was due to the previous owner who did not plan ahead. Maybe you can consider it, too, and then you always have a backup to fall back on.
