Shout out to all the bloggers who have helped me learn new ways to save

Kacie at Sense to Save: Told me about how to save money on road side assistance by checking with my insurance company.

Debbie at My Attempts at Frugal Living: Freeze the ends of the bread that nobody eats and then use it for French toast.  Been doing this for months now and it works out great.  No longer throwing any bread.  The ends always go in the freezer and if I've bought too much and we won't have time to use it all I put it in the freezer bag also.

Thrifty Mom in Boise: Reminded me to pull out all those left over Christmas Cards from the previous year instead of running out an purchasing new ones this past Christmas.  Someone gave me a large stash of blank Christmas Cards 2 years ago that I found after I had already done my cards this past Christmas so I probably won't need to buy any for 2014!

We Are: Clamco: Is inspiring in the amount of great deals she finds thrifting and then reselling on ebay.  She's inspired me to get back into it as I used to do this a lot especially in the summer when there are a lot of garage sales.  I have some things listed right now, mostly clothes or toys that my children have grown out of or don't use anymore but I can't wait for the weather to get better to start hitting up garage sales again.

Tina from My Shiny Pennies (doesn't seem to be blogging anymore): Recommended that when cooking on the stove to turn off the heat before the food is done and let the left over heat finish the cooking.  It never occurred to me to do this before but I've been doing it now when I cook eggs, boil pasta, make pancakes or french toast, pretty much everything I cook on the stove top except maybe chicken.

Precious at Frugal Makes Cents Two: (no longer blogging anymore but the site is a great resource for learning ways to save money) Back in January, I read about how much electricity the dishwasher can use to dry dishes and have quit using the heat setting to dry our dishes since then

A couple other things I've learned through reading blogs but I can't remember where I read them from first:

  • Keeping a bag in the freezer for vegetable scraps for when I make chicken stock
  • Combining baking to get the most out of the cost of heating the oven (sounds simple but it never occurred to me to do this until I read it)
  • Rinsing out ziploc baggies and re-using them.  I've been trying to do this more and more

Most of these things that I've learned through reading blogs seem so simple and really are that simple.  But they are things that I never even thought about doing or how they could impact our savings until I read them.

So thank you everyone for helping me save money. :)

  1. I'm glad my bread thing could help. I'm a star. I find all kinds of ways to save some money when I read other blogs. I don't post often in comments, but I usually lurk.
